STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It was a celebration that brought smiles, laughter and tears of joy as the Francis School, Great Kills, graduated 32 yesterday.

Marcelino Ortiz Jr. was the valedictorian and Richard J. Freeo the salutatorian.

As students, family and faculty gathered yesterday at the Francis School, looking forward was as important as realizing the worth of the recent past.

In an auditorium and cafeteria transformed by the school’s turqoise, black and white colors, and a large arch of balloons, the graduates grappled with a mix of excitement and intense nostalgia for an intimate and nurturing atmosphere.

“If there was a theme for the day, it was family,” said Assistant Principal Sean Walsh. “These are a bunch of good kids; they came here for more individualized attention, and saying goodbye to them was like saying goodbye to members of the family.”

The graduates are:

Justin G. Barahona, Craig Buono, Nicholas Caccese, Matthew Coffey, Anthony R. Colacino, Josephine Conigliaro, Erina A. Cooke, Nicholas DeGirolarmo, Nicole DiFato, Richard J. Freeo, Thomas F. Gogarty, Verdon Hadzibrahimovic, Luan Husic, John Janaskie, Gabrielle D. Kane, Jonathan T. McGowan, Teresa A. Neglia, James Nicastro, Marcelino Ortiz Jr., Christopher T. Palladino, Marissa R.
