Here 2 Play

Ocean City was the place to be this past week, hosting the 38th Annual White Marlin Open at Harbour Island- which showcased the world’s largest billfish tournament, and the 2011 Ocean City Lacrosse Classic- which featured some of the nation’s elite past, present, and future lacrosse players.

This year’s White Marlin Open proved to be bigger and better than ever with more than 2 tons of fish caught, over 200 registered boats from MD, TX, DE, VA, NJ, PA, and FL, and nearly $2.5 million awarded in prizes.  The prizes were split between two categories: Top Boat and Top Angler.  The top three boat finishers were Alexis, Over the Top, and No Quarter. With five catches of the coveted Blue Marlin, Alexis’ boat cruised to their first place finish by more than 200 points.  Over the Top finished second by catching numerous white marlin, yet they could not compensate for the 105 point differential between a blue and white marlin.  No Quarter rounded out the top three with a diverse catch of white marlin, blue marlin, sailfish and tuna.  To redeem his second place finish in the boat category, John Janaskie of Over the Top captured the Top Angler award with Susan McCart of Reel Joy and Scott Steele of Topless finishing second and third, respectively.

In addition to blue and white marlin, the tournament featured substantial catches of tuna, wahoo, shark, and dolphin.  The largest catch of the day was a 699.5 lb. blue marlin by John Schindler of Severna Park, Md. and the largest prize of the day of $758,828 was awarded to Brian Kline of Laytonsville, Md. for an 86.5 lb. white marlin. ven the world’s largest billfish tournament could not upstage the wealth of talent on display at the 18th Annual Ocean City Lacrosse Classic at Northside Park Athletic Complex, which hosted several divisions of the nation’s best lacrosse players: Elite (18+) men and women, Men’s Master’s (35+), Men’s Grandmaster’s (45+), and Men’s Super-Grandmaster’s (50+).  The Men’s and Women’s Elite division showcased the brightest young stars in one of the fastest growing sports in the world.  Maryland Lacrosse Club proved to be a formidable opponent with a roster full of nearly all D-1 players, trouncing Magerks in the championship, 13-3.  The excitement level only grew as the Men’s Master’s and Women’s Elite divisions provided thrilling overtime finishes.  Green Turtle battled back to score the last three goals and edge Kooper’s Tavern 7-6 in the Men’s Master’s  and Pickles Pub defeated Ocean Pride for the second straight year in the Women’s Elite championship.  If the play wasn’t dazzling enough, the uniforms were even cooler.

Deion “Primetime” Sanders, a Hall of Famer and elite football player once said, “You look good, you feel good. You feel good, you play good. You play good, the pay is good!”

Voyager Fishing Report

November 24, 2010 - VOYAGER NEWS LETTER UPDATE

The Voyager will be running an open boat STRIPED BASS JIGGING SPECIAL on Thanksgiving Day. Fishing has been good, the winds are supposed to be light and the rain is supposed to hold off until the afternoon. The boat will be sailing at 6:30AM and will return by 12:30PM. The fare is $55 for adults, $50 for seniors and $30 for children. No reservations are required.

We made our second trip to the offshore SEA BASS grounds over the weekend. Once again we saw a decent mix of SEA BASS, PORGIES, LING, POLLOCK, and COD. There were more JUMBO SEA BASS mixed in on this trip than on the last.

The SEA BASS pool was won with a fish close to seven pounds, unfortunately I misplaced the angler's name. John Janaskie of Staten Island won the edible bottom fish pool with a 28 pound POLLOCK. Most people caught between 15 and 25 fish and a few had more than that.

Fishing should improve each week as the water temperature falls and the migration gets into full swing.

Capt. Bryan Pieros of Lebanon swept the New England Division of the American Striper Association Tournament with his Daylight from Great Kills by winning Sunday's Stratford, Ct. contest to add to two previous wins in Ct. and Ma.

The w
inning fish for his Michael's Bait & Tackle Team was a 41.3 pound striper caught on an eel at Montauk.  The crew consisted of Chuck Many, Matt Calabri, John Janaskie and Paul Sleph.

That victory, combined with others in Ct. and Ma., gave Pieros’ Michael’s Bait & Tackle team the Northeast Division title – and has him in the lead for ASA Angler of the Year with two final tournaments to go in Cape May and Virginia Beach. Greg Nunn of Hillsborough took second at Stratford with a 38-pound bass, and Capt. Ken Zwirko of Union was third on Bunker Down at 33.45 pounds.  Read More
